Most lists of "a good husband's qualities" mix two very different things together. Some are rights — things a husband owes his wife, which she's entitled to whether or not he's a pleasant man. Others are character — what makes a man genuinely good to live with.
The difference matters. If you're deciding whether to marry someone, you're looking for both. If you're married to someone who falls short, you need to know which shortfalls are disappointments and which are your rights being denied.
The measure the Prophet ﷺ gave
"The best of you is the best to his family — and I am the best of you to my family." — Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3895; Sunan Ibn Majah 1977 — hasan sahih
"The most complete of believers in faith are those best in character — and the best of you are those best to their wives." — Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162; Musnad Ahmad; Sunan Abi Dawud; Sahih Ibn Hibban — hasan sahih
Read what's being measured. Not how he prays in public, not how he's spoken of at the masjid, not his income. How he treats the people in his own home — where nobody is watching. The Prophet ﷺ made that the test of a man's faith, and applied it to himself first.
What a husband owes his wife — his obligations
These aren't qualities to hope for. They're obligations in fiqh, owed whether or not the marriage is happy.
1. Kind companionship
"And live with them in kindness." — an-Nisa 4:19
Mu'asharah bil-ma'ruf — treating her with honour, speaking gently, and refraining from harm, physical or emotional. This is the foundation the rest stands on. Emotional harm is not a lesser matter.
2. Maintenance
Food, clothing, healthcare and provision, according to his means. Her own income and property remain hers — he cannot claim them. What nafaqah covers.
3. Housing
Suitable, private accommodation — she is not obliged to share a household she hasn't agreed to. In-laws in Islam: what a wife is and isn't obliged to do.
4. Intimacy
Fulfilling her physical rights within marriage according to his ability, to protect her chastity. This is her right, not only his.
5. Justice between wives
If he has more than one wife: equal division of nights and fair treatment. What he owes each wife.
6. Religious guidance and protection
Teaching her, or making it possible for her to learn, the obligations of the deen — and shielding her from harmful and sinful environments. Not by controlling her, but by making the home a place where faith can grow.
7. Protecting her honour and privacy
Guarding her dignity, and keeping what passes between them strictly private. A husband who discusses his wife's private life with others — his family, his friends — is breaching a right, not just being indiscreet.
If these are being denied, that isn't a personality clash. It's a question of rights, and there are routes for it. Ask a scholar.
What makes a husband good — beyond what he owes
A man can meet every obligation above and still be hard to live with. These are what the Sunnah adds.
He's gentle in speech. The Sunnah makes a specific allowance for warm, generous words between spouses — affectionate exaggeration to comfort and reassure is permitted between a husband and wife, when it's permitted almost nowhere else (Sahih Muslim 2605). A good husband uses it.
He looks at the whole person.
"A believing man should not hate a believing woman: if he dislikes one trait in her, he is pleased with another." — Sahih Muslim 1469
A good husband doesn't reduce his wife to her faults.
He controls his anger. When disagreements run hot, he steps away rather than escalating. Even 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, after a disagreement with Fatimah, went and slept in the masjid rather than let it boil over at home.
He apologises when he's wrong. And doesn't wait for her to go first. How to apologise to your spouse.
He doesn't confuse leadership with control. A wife's obedience in Islam is limited to what is good and reasonable — never to anything harmful or sinful. A husband who demands more than that isn't exercising leadership; he's overreaching. Why the same argument keeps coming back.
He keeps her secrets. Including from his own family.
What to look for before marriage
If you're considering a proposal, the obligations above are your checklist — the question is whether he understands them and will honour them.
Ask him directly:
- Where will we live? Is living with your family expected?
- How will my income be treated if I work?
- How do you behave when you're angry?
- Who do you talk to about problems in your relationships?
- What did conflict look like in your parents' home?
Watch for:
- How he talks about his mother, his sisters, and other women
- Whether he treats people with less status than him kindly — waiters, cleaners, younger relatives
- How he responds to being disagreed with
- Whether he keeps confidences, or shares other people's private matters
The Prophet's ﷺ measure applies here too. You can't yet see how he'll treat his wife — but you can see how he treats everyone in his life who can do nothing for him.
You can also write conditions into the nikah. Islamic premarital counseling covers what to discuss and what's possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are a husband's obligations to his wife in Islam? Kind companionship (4:19), maintenance, private housing, intimacy, justice between wives if more than one, religious guidance and protection, and safeguarding her honour and privacy.
What does "the best of you are the best to their wives" mean? It's from Tirmidhi 1162, graded hasan sahih. It makes a man's treatment of his wife a measure of his faith — not his public religiosity.
What should I look for in a husband in Islam? Whether he understands and will honour the obligations above, how he handles anger and disagreement, how he treats people who can do nothing for him, and whether he keeps confidences.
Is a husband who provides financially a good husband? Provision is one obligation among several. A husband can provide fully and still deny other rights — kind treatment, privacy, housing — that are equally owed.
Does a husband have the right to his wife's salary? No. Her income and property remain hers.
Can a wife refuse to live with her in-laws? She's entitled to private accommodation and isn't obliged to share a household she hasn't agreed to.
What if my husband isn't fulfilling his obligations? That's a question of rights, not compatibility. Ask a scholar what applies to your situation and what routes are available.
