How to End a Haram Relationship (and When It Can Become Halal)

By Khidma

You know. That is the thing nobody says out loud in these questions: the person asking already knows the relationship is wrong. What they don't know is how to end it, or whether it has to end at all.

The questions we receive sound like this:

"I've loved this girl for 3 and a half years now. And a year ago, me and her started a relationship together, and half way through she became Muslim as well. I was so in love, and so was she"

"it is hard to ignore these feelings because of how severe the sin was"

"I am not in any haram relationship. In my culture, the word 'boyfriend' is commonly used to mean a suitor who approaches for marriage."

The short answer: a haram relationship in Islam is any romantic relationship outside marriage, including private messaging, calls and meeting alone, whether or not anything physical has happened. To end it, cut all contact completely, repent, and fill the space it leaves. If you want to marry the person, the path is to stop the private contact, make tawbah, and propose openly through their family; a past relationship does not bar the marriage once both have repented. And you are not required to tell a future spouse about sins Allah has concealed.

What makes a relationship haram in Islam?

Islam does not only forbid zina (sex outside marriage). It forbids the road to it:

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا

"And do not approach zina. Indeed, it is an immorality and an evil way."

Surah al-Isra 17:32

"Do not approach" covers the things that lead there: romantic closeness, being alone together, the private world a couple builds outside marriage. The Prophet ﷺ said of seclusion (khalwah):

أَلَا لَا يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِامْرَأَةٍ إِلَّا كَانَ ثَالِثَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ

"No man is alone with a woman except that Shaytan is the third of them."

Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2165, Musnad Ahmad. Graded sahih.

Is texting or calling with romantic intent haram?

Yes, even with no physical contact. Private, romantic correspondence, flirtatious talk and late-night calls outside marriage fall under the same ruling as physical closeness, because they lead to the same place. The Quran tells the Prophet's wives not to be soft in speech with men (33:32); the principle is that speech between non-mahrams stays purposeful and plain. A relationship that lives entirely on a phone is still a relationship.

Is "boyfriend" haram if it's just a word?

Islam judges conduct, not labels. If a man has approached a woman's family for marriage, and their conversations are about compatibility and expectations, with her family's knowledge, without being alone together and without flirtation, that is a lawful courtship (khitbah), whatever word the culture uses for him. If the "boyfriend" label describes a private romance with no family involvement, the ruling follows the reality.

How to end a haram relationship

Scholars give the ruling. Counselors see what actually works, and why most attempts fail.

Why you keep going back

People return to a relationship they know is wrong for the same reason a thirsty person drinks seawater: the relief is immediate and the harm is later. Two traps catch almost everyone:

  • "One last conversation for closure." Or "let's just stay friends." These are not endings; they are ways of keeping the attachment alive at a lower dose. You cannot end a dependency by taking smaller amounts.
  • Fear of the empty space. You aren't only losing a person. You're losing the secret messages, the feeling of being wanted, the thing that held up your self-esteem. The loneliness you dread is mostly the silence of facing yourself without a distraction.

What a clean break looks like

  1. Total no-contact. Block the number, unfollow everywhere, stay out of shared places. Set up your environment so that in a weak moment you can't reach them, because willpower will fail at 1am.
  2. Expect withdrawal. The first few weeks hurt physically: aching, crying, elaborate reasons to reach out. That is not a sign you were meant to be together. It is detox, and it passes.
  3. Fill the space on purpose. The energy that went into the relationship needs somewhere to go now: structured time with good company, regular dhikr (remembrance of Allah), exercise, a class, counseling. Leave the space empty and the old source will fill it again.
  4. Repent, and keep repenting. Tawbah is not a one-time event. If you slip, return. Allah forgives sins that are repeated, as long as the repentance is renewed.

If the guilt has become a loop of checking whether your tawbah "counted", that may be religious OCD rather than conscience; read religious OCD in Islam: how to break the waswasa cycle.

Can a haram relationship become halal?

Yes. If the two of you want to marry, the path is clear:

  1. End the private contact immediately. Not after a transition period; now.
  2. Make sincere tawbah, each of you, for what has passed.
  3. Propose openly through her family and wali. The relationship comes out of secrecy into the light, where a marriage belongs.

Does a past relationship or past zina prevent the marriage?

No. Once both have sincerely repented, nothing in the past bars them from marrying each other. Allah says of those who repent:

إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا فَأُولَٰئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ

"Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good."

Surah al-Furqan 25:70

And the Prophet ﷺ said:

التَّائِبُ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ كَمَنْ لَا ذَنْبَ لَهُ

"The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin."

Sunan Ibn Majah 4250

Marriage is in fact the remedy the Sunnah prescribes for two people who have feelings for each other:

لَمْ يُرَ لِلْمُتَحَابَّيْنِ مِثْلُ النِّكَاحِ

"Nothing has been seen like marriage for two who love one another."

Sunan Ibn Majah 1847, al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi. Graded sahih.

How to move from secrecy to a proposal without it falling apart

Counselors suggest two things.

A full pause first. Thirty to sixty days of no contact at all, before any proposal. It is an act of repentance, and it drains the secrecy that was keeping the relationship exciting, so you can judge the person soberly.

Then only through family. After the pause, the man approaches her father or wali directly. No side channels. This moves the relationship from a private fantasy to a public, accountable reality, and it tests whether he is committed to her or to the secrecy.

Signs it should not become a marriage

Not every strong attachment is a good marriage. Watch for:

SignWhat it tells you
They only exist in the shadowsIf they stall, make excuses, or refuse to involve families when asked, they're attached to the secrecy, not to you
No accountabilityIf either of you won't admit the relationship started wrongly, or calls the secrecy "special", a marriage will have no shared sense of answering to Allah
One of you is rescuing the otherA bond built on saving someone from depression, a bad home or loneliness is a trauma bond, not a foundation

Before any nikah, read Islamic premarital counseling: the Muslim couple's complete guide.

Will Allah forgive a haram relationship?

Yes. No sin is beyond forgiveness except dying in shirk, and Allah says He forgives all sins for those who return to Him (39:53). For the specific question of zina, including when it has happened more than once, read does Allah forgive zina? Tawbah and repeated relapse.

Do I have to tell my future spouse about my past?

No. A person is not required, or even encouraged, to disclose past sins to a prospective spouse. Allah concealed them; you are not to tear the cover off. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"All of my nation will be pardoned except those who publicize their sins."

Sahih al-Bukhari 6069, Sahih Muslim 2990

He went on to describe a man who sins at night, wakes with Allah having covered it, and then tells people what he did, "tearing down the veil of Allah from himself."

Two exceptions. If you have an infection that could harm a spouse, you must disclose the medical fact. And if a specific condition was stipulated, such as never having been married, you may not lie about it. General past sins stay between you and Allah.

Frequently asked questions

Can I marry my haram relationship?

Yes, after both of you repent, end the private contact, and go through her family. The past does not block the marriage.

Is it haram to stay friends after ending the relationship?

A private friendship between non-mahrams is the same thing under a different name, and in practice it keeps the attachment alive. The break needs to be complete.

What if they threaten to tell my family?

Threats and blackmail are a crime, not a reason to stay. Tell one trusted adult, keep the messages, and do not let fear decide this. A relationship held together by threats was never love.

Can I break off an engagement after finding out about their past relationship?

Yes. An engagement (khitbah) is a promise to marry, not a contract. Either side may withdraw before the nikah. Ending it without reason is disliked, but ending it over a real concern about trust or compatibility is permitted and carries no sin.

How long does it take to get over a haram relationship?

The sharp pain usually eases within weeks if contact is truly cut; it drags on for months when contact continues in small doses. The question is less about time than about whether the break is real.
